"There's certain times in the summer that I like to go there, like the first full moon after blackberries bloom," Barbara Crandell, who is of Cherokee ancestry, said Friday. "That's what my people consider the start of summer." Crandell, 73, was convicted Thursday of trespassing at the Octagon Earthworks, which was built 1,650 years ago by the Hopewell Indians and is on a private golf course. Licking County Municipal Judge Thomas Marcelain fined her $250 and ordered her to follow the rules for visitors to the mounds. The public is required to stay on wooden viewing platforms or a trail bordering the course. Crandell was arrested June 26 after praying on a mound she said was 100 feet from the 10th fairway.

Crandell, who has prayed at the site for 20 years, argues that the land is public. She also believes she has a right to be there as a descendant of the people who built the complex of 8-foot-high earthworks. "Today I feel much better and the sun's shining and everything is great," she said Marriage licenses Adrian Michael Shample, construction and Denise Renee Eckelberry, credit manager. The complex, which is 30 miles east of Columbus, is owned by the Ohio Historical Society and leased to the private Moundbuilders Country Club. The country club says the restrictions are because of safety concerns. "She has to follow the rules," club President Skip Salome said on Thursday. "I hope she'll work with us." The property was purchased with public money in 1893 and eventually turned over to the Ohio Historical Society. The country club uses and maintains the land under a lease that expires in 2078.
